How to spot real expertise.

There was a time when expertise seemed easier to recognise.

A job title, a qualification, years of experience. Job done.

Now we’re surrounded by confident opinions, polished personal brands and people who sound convincing. The challenge isn’t finding information. It’s deciding who to trust.

Here are a few signs that someone genuinely knows their stuff.

They know the fundamentals

Real experts have a deep understanding of their subject. They can explain the basics clearly, connect ideas together and answer questions without hiding behind jargon.

They talk honestly about uncertainty

Not everything is black and white.

People who know a subject well can usually tell you what is well established, what is still debated and where the gaps in knowledge sit. They don’t present every opinion as a fact.

They’re comfortable saying “I don’t know”

This is one of the strongest signals there is.

If someone can admit they don’t have all the answers, they’re far more likely to be trustworthy when they do have one.

They point you elsewhere

Genuine experts don’t need to be the sole source of truth. They’ll recommend books, articles, research and other people worth listening to.

They’re interested in helping you learn, not building a following.

They rely on evidence, not volume

When challenged, they explain their thinking. They don’t just repeat themselves more loudly.

They keep learning

The best experts stay curious.

They update their views when new information appears. They change their minds when the evidence changes. They remain learners, even after years of experience.

Maybe that’s the simplest test of all. Real expertise isn’t about having every answer. It’s about knowing how to keep looking for better ones.
