How to Develop Expertise

Developing real expertise rarely happens by accident.

It takes dedication, deliberate practice and a willingness to keep learning long after the basics have been mastered.

The people who become truly skilled in their field are the ones who stay curious, invest time and show up even when progress feels slow.

At We Are BRAVE, expertise matters because it creates confidence, credibility and impact.

Expertise is not a destination. It’s an ongoing commitment to growth that helps both individuals and teams perform at their best.

1O Dimensions of Expertise

Expertise can take many forms. 🛡️

What we know is that the depth of expertise tends to show up in dimensions. ⏹️

When an expert is displaying multiple dimensions it shows the true breadth of expertise which in turn leads to authority, insight and most importantly, trust and results. 💪🏼

How to spot real expertise.

There was a time when expertise seemed easier to recognise.

A job title, a qualification, years of experience. Job done.

Now we’re surrounded by confident opinions, polished personal brands and people who sound convincing. The challenge isn’t finding information. It’s deciding who to trust.

Here are a few signs that someone genuinely knows their stuff.

They know the fundamentals

Real experts have a deep understanding of their subject. They can explain the basics clearly, connect ideas together and answer questions without hiding behind jargon.

They talk honestly about uncertainty

Not everything is black and white.

People who know a subject well can usually tell you what is well established, what is still debated and where the gaps in knowledge sit. They don’t present every opinion as a fact.

They’re comfortable saying “I don’t know”

This is one of the strongest signals there is.

If someone can admit they don’t have all the answers, they’re far more likely to be trustworthy when they do have one.

They point you elsewhere

Genuine experts don’t need to be the sole source of truth. They’ll recommend books, articles, research and other people worth listening to.

They’re interested in helping you learn, not building a following.

They rely on evidence, not volume

When challenged, they explain their thinking. They don’t just repeat themselves more loudly.

They keep learning

The best experts stay curious.

They update their views when new information appears. They change their minds when the evidence changes. They remain learners, even after years of experience.

Maybe that’s the simplest test of all. Real expertise isn’t about having every answer. It’s about knowing how to keep looking for better ones.

At We Are Brave we’re experts in our fields with over 50 years of deep experience behind us, and we’d love to share it with you.

Authority VS Expertise

When someone else gets that promotion, wins the pitch or books the speaking slot, most of us have asked ourselves why they were picked over people who were just as good, or better.

It’s an uncomfortable question, and the honest answer usually has little to do with who knew the most.

Expertise and authority are easy to confuse, but they aren’t the same thing.

Expertise is what you know, and it comes from years of practice, study and finished work.

Authority is what other people believe about what you know, and it depends on whether they’ve seen what you do. Plenty of skilled people put all their effort into the first and assume the second will take care of itself.

It often doesn’t.

A hiring manager can’t shortlist someone they’ve never heard of, and a client can’t rely on skills they’ve never seen in action. We’ve spent a long time working with professionals in many different sectors, and the same thing keeps turning up: once the client knows your expertise is there, you’ll often win the work.

How are you showing your expertise to those around you?
